Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen. While the master quietly served tea, the professor talked about Zen. The master poured the visitor’s cup to the brim, and then kept pouring. The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!" "Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"

Japanese and European medieval societies developed along similar feudal lines and in both, a warrior elite emerged as the dominant force. In both parts of the world, honour played an important part in their cultures and knights and samurai were expected to follow their perspective warrior codes, the ‘Chivalric Code’ in Europe and ‘Bushido’ (way of the warrior) in Japan.

The belief in lycanthropes or werewolves dates back to ancient times with Ovid, Virgil and Herodotus all expressing belief in the phenomenon. Although the origin of the myth of the werewolf is unknown, in one of the earliest examples of a werewolf legend, Greek mythology tells of the story of Lycaon who was transformed into a wolf as a result of eating human flesh and wandered in that shape for nine years.

When he was departing a few years later, Gasan warned him: "Studying the truth speculatively is useful as a way of collecting preaching material. But remember that unless you meditate constantly you light of truth may go out."

An almost complete flute made out of the bones of griffon vulture was found in 2008 at Hohle Fels, in a cave in Southern Germany. It has five finger holes, a V-shaped mouthpiece and is 0.3 inches (8 millimetres) wide and was 13 inches (34 centimetres) long when it was whole.
