I am a pathological learner. From my earliest memories, my life has been marked by the pursuit of understanding.
All through my childhood I was constantly asking “How does that work?”, “What happens if we do this?”, “How does that fit together?”, “How can I apply this knowledge?” and much more. I remember at least once, to my mother’s chagrin, taking apart part of a refrigerator so that I could see how they were put together. I remember informally practicing the scientific method on my uncle’s farm as I observed the flow of a stream, made small changes to the environment after reflection, and then observed the effects of what I had done. I read much as a child – both fiction and non-fiction – and would often pass on knowledge to unsuspecting friends and family members.
This has certainly continued into adulthood. I continue to read widely – albeit mostly purported non-fiction. While there are some who would argue that non-fiction is just fiction that is not as creative as a novel, I tend to prefer it. And I continue to pursue understanding, connection, analysis, action, and communication.
These traits permeate my entire life – from my job as a Supply Chain Analyst to my functions within a local church. Every part of me seems to be driven to discover, apply, and share what I have found.
