Background

Greetings! Here is a little about me.

I was born in Muncie,IN.  I attended Morrison Mock Elementary until Grade 4.  While in fourth grade, my family moved to Cowan.  I attended Cowan Elementary and Jr. -Sr. High School.  While in school i was active in German Club and National Honor Society. I was also team manager for the Volleyball team.  It was in high school that I first started learning German.  I took four years of German with a great teacher who has served as my inspiration- Jan Garner, whom we all affectionally called Ms. G.

I graduated from Cowan High School in 1987!

Germany, Part I

During my studies at BSU, I was selected as BSU's exchange student to the Westfälische Wilhelms Universität in Münster, Germany.

During the 1989-90 academic year, I studied in Münster and had a job in the Englisches Seminar (English Dept.) at the University.

It was an exciting time to be in Germany!  In November, the Berlin Wall fell and East and West Germany began the process of re-unification!

While living in Germany, I had the chance to visit Holland, France, Austria, Hungary and Italy.  Some of my favorite places from this time are:

Cologne, Germany
Trier, Germany
Aachen, Germany
Budapest,Hungary
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Paris, France
Rome,Italy
Salzburg, Austria
Vienna, Austria

Grad School

In 1993 I began my M.A. studies at the University of Cincinnati.  I graduated from UC in 1995 with my Master's Degree in German.

During my studies at UC, I was active in UC Men's and Women's Choruses.  There I made friendships which continue today! One highlight was signing back-up for Kenny Rogers! (and meeting his opening act backstage-- Faith Hill!)

It was at UC where my interest in classical music really grew.  The University is home to one of the most renowned conservatories in the U.S. and I attended dozens of performances.

Ernst-Moritz Arndt Gymnasium: Fulbright Scholarship

In 1992, I was selected to serve as a Foreign Language Teaching Assistant at the Ernst-Moritz Arndt Gymnasium in Osnabrück, Germany. This opportunity was made possible by a scholarship from the Fulbright Commision and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (German Academic Exchange Service).

I enjoyed a wonderful year of assisting in many classrooms of different levels.  My mentor teacher was Werner Kolle.  I assisted him in his 8th Grade English course four times a week.  I also assisted various other teachers as they taught English and about American Culture.  It was a lot of fun and very educational.  I learned a lot about the German Culture and Educational System.

Some of my fondest memories of this time are of the wonderful people with whom I lived: Helmut and Birgit.  They are both teachers at the school.

While living in Osnabrück, I had the chance to visit Berlin for the Fulbright Conference.  Berlin is an amazing city and was still dealing with issues of reunification.

First Teaching Job

In 1993, I got my first full time teaching job at Carlyle High School in Illinois.  We maintained an Exchange Program with the Gymnasium Sulingen in  Northern Germany.

During my four years at Carlyle, we visited Germany twice.  Our students lived with German families and attended classes.  We also took some field trips to Münster, Berlin , Bonn (while it was still capital) and Gronigen(in Holland).

Luzern
Lausanne
Geneve
Bern
Fribourg
St. Gallen
Basel
Einsiedeln
Appenzell

Germany:

Freiburg
Konstanz
Reichenau Island

The trip and experiences from the grant were awesome!  I'll write more later!

Stiftsbiblithek St. Gallen- Abbey Library St. Gallen

This was my top priority in my project. The Library is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Library has an incredible collection of manuscripts. It was truly an awe-inspiring experience to work with some of the manuscripts.
