Dr. Joseph Schlessinger is the William H. Prusoff Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology at the Yale University School of Medicine. In this role since 2001, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger previously was Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology at the New York University Medical School and Director of the Skirball Institute for Biomolecular Medicine. Dr. Joseph Schlessinger was also formerly a research scientist and professor at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel. Outside of the academic sphere, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger served as a Research Director for Rorer Biotechnology from 1985 to 1990 and was the founder of several pharmaceutical companies including SUGEN, Inc. (1991), Plexxikon (2001), and Kolltan (2008). A magna cum laude graduate of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Joseph Schlessinger acquired both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the Israeli university. For his doctoral studies, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger attended the Weizmann Institute of Science where he completed research in biophysics. After acquiring his Ph.D., Dr. Joseph Schlessinger completed postdoctoral fellowships in the Departments of Chemistry and Applied Physics at Cornell University, and in the Department of Immunology at the National Institute of Health’s National Cancer Institute. Over the course of his career, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger has been distinguished with a number of professional honors. Some of the awards Dr. Joseph Schlessinger has received include the Michael Landeau Prize, Sara Leady Prize, Hestrin Prize, Levinson Prize, and the Ciba-Drew. Recently, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger received the Medal of Danica Hrvatska Order from the Republic of Croatia and became a foreign member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Joseph Schlessinger is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the European Academy of Sciences, among many other prominent organizations. In addition to his numerous professional affiliations, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger serves on the editorial boards of a variety of scientific research journals including Cell, Molecular Cell, and many others.
