The Oyster Project is a member led disabled persons self help charity based in Lewes, East Sussex, UK
Our members and core project delivery volunteers are people with disabilities and our activities, workshops and events take place throughout the year.
We organise our activities with the emphasis on empowerment and involvement for disabled people.
In many activities Oyster Project members are the facilitating volunteers. Other groups and workshops are run by supporting volunteers and Oyster Project members are encouraged towards being facilitators themselves.
Our emphasis is on self-help, volunteering, work experience and taking action to develop personal skills and life satisfaction.
What we aim for
The outcomes of our activities are centered on our members gaining skills plus experience, including work experience and also supporting other disabled people and engaging with the public.
For example our WeBay project raises funds whilst also being supported and delivered by volunteer members in ways appropriate to them.
In a further example as part of the IT strand a number of members have been provided with IT equipment, internet provision and training, the costs are being met by the work of DiTs and Community Internet where funds are generated by Oyster member's skills and activities in advanced IT.
Just as importantly the funding for our art, craft, social activities within the Personal strand has also come from the voluntary work undertaken by Oyster participants in the IT field via DiTs and the Community Internet projects plus our WeBay fundraising. This model is currently being extended into new projects such as Radio Lewes and lewesTV

We ask our members what they would like to do in order to make a difference to their lives. Our motto is 'The World is Your Oyster'.
Working as a community we then try and make these ideas happen.
We know that by being active and voluntarily taking part in creative and supportive social activities we can make a difference in our lives, the lives of people around us and the community we live in.
Our efforts are based on direct experience, we know that by doing meaningful and creative activities together life is so much better and can lead to surprising and worthwhile outcomes for our members and the community at large.
