I am Sheila Webber, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Studies, University of sheffield, UK. In Second Life I am Sheila Yoshikawa, and own our SL island, Infolit iSchool. This page has two short  PowerPoints put together for the event, and links/embeddings of other resources. The focus is on virtual worlds, specifically Second Life. In part 1 I give an introduction to uses of virtual worlds, including my own experience, and in Part 2 (in the right hand column towards the end of the page) I focus on Information Literacy & Second Life.
**Please read the web "post-it notes"** in particular the PINK ones which are the "headers" for the items. I hope you find it interesting ;-)

ICT for the Non-Specialist - Virtual Worlds: Teachers and pupils talk about SL

The link in the next box is to a professionally made video **please watch at least the first five minutes**. In the first section (5 minutes) a British teacher John Hanson School Community School, Andover, UK,  explains his use of teen Second Life, with input from his pupils explaining their use of SL. The rest is also interesting, explaining the project to redesign virtually and rebuild Cleveland's Skinningrove Jetty.  The page has good links - scroll down for them

Global Kids present themselves in 30 seconds

Below is a video from the Global Kids Virtual Video Project. Please **Look at at least a few of the "30 second" films to get a flavour of what they say**.
It is a "Collection of 30-second machinima films highlighting some of the teens’ online personality in Second Life" - these are the teens who made machinima (SL animation) called "Discovered" which premiered 1st July and is linked to below. Flying &  being able to drive are two things that come up more than once.

VVP 30 Seconds

Discovered: SL film made by teens

"July 1, 2009, at the Sony Wonder Theater in Manhattan, fifteen New York public high school students who are Global Kids teen filmmakers will premiere their film Discovered. Discovered is a digital "machinima" film produced in Second Life that explores the powerful issue of child sex trafficking through the fictional story of one Mexican teenager. This is the final product of a year-long, intensive digital filmmaking program called the Virtual Video Project (VVP), an after-school program conducted by Global Kids, Inc in NYC. The students gathered regularly during the past year to learn about film production, human rights, and virtual worlds, culminating in a serious issue machinima film produced entirely by the youth filmmakers." This is part of the Global Kids project and the page below has their film "Discovered" embedded in it

"Additional reading": Health applications

If this topic interests you: two of examples of health applications in Second Life. There are a couple of islands devoted to health information and activity by medical schools as well as private companies.

"Additional reading": Other virtual worlds

I have focused on Second Life as that is the largest publically accessible virtual world, most used for education, and also I know it best! But as I have said, there are many virtual worlds in existence.

"Additional reading" 2008 METAVERSE TOUR - THE SOCIAL VIRTUAL WORLD'S A STAGE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CijdlYOSPc

This video by Gary Hayes zips through 50 different virtual worlds. One or two are gone now (e.g. the Google world) but most still exist - and more have arrived!

"Additional reading" Philanthropy: Charitable work in Second Life

Second Life is used for fund raising and raising awareness of issues such as disability (for example, 27th June was "Helen Keller Day" with events raising awareness about accessibility issues, and there are regular fundraising events for cancer charities). This provides opportunities for young people to become involved in philanthropic worls e.g. fundraising, or building a presence for a charity in SL.
